A Scarborough mother charged with manslaughter in the 2011 death of her disabled daughter has now been charged with first-degree murder in the case.
Cindy Ann Sherry Ali, 42, was arrested Wednesday morning, and scheduled to appear in court today.
In February 2011, 16-year-old Cynara Ali died in hospital with no visible injuries. That night, both mother and daughter were wheeled out of the Malvern apartment on stretchers.
Ali told police that two armed men with Jamaican accents broke in to their Malvern townhouse and rummaged through cupboards looking for a package. When they fled, Ali noticed her immobile daughter was not breathing.
The family’s father and three other children were not home at the time.
More than a year later, police said they believed Ali had made up the home invasion story.
In March 2012, they charged her with manslaughter, obstruction of justice and failing to provide the necessaries of life.
